So recently i have been watching the fantastic new cooking program by Nigella Lawson known as the Taste on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. The simple, but genius idea behind the show, is that a mixture of home cooks and professional chefs fight it out to win over the Judges by loading a spoon of there own recipe. The judges then taste the spoon and decide from the taste only whether they want the chef or home cook on their team. Each team then battles it out every week by cooking a recipe from a different genre and their mentors have to choose one spoon from there team to be judged by a guest chef, if they win the receive immunity from the next part of the competition the cook off where the mentors decide who is going home.
I have really enjoyed this series even though i am not that big a fan of cooking programs. However, I have just watched the first episode of the US Version and they are on a whole different scale which brings me to mind of why i am writing this blog. The first thing i noticed while watching the US version was the amount of Judges. In the UK version there were 3 mentors/judges Ludo Lefebvre, Anthony Bourdain and the British controversial home cook herself Nigella Lawson. Nonetheless, The US version seems to have an Extra Chef, Brian Malarkey.
So why do they have to change things in the UK version compared to the US version? I know that the USA have a bigger TV and Film budget when it comes to these shoes but, i do not see why the UK version had to be scaled down. Why couldn’t they get a well known British Chef on the show as well such as Michelle Roux Junior, Jamie Oliver or even an unknown but well skilled British Chef to fill the fourth spot.
Another Change in set up was the actual studio of the show. In the American version they have a big fancy studio with more contestant’s having an hour to cook for their audition, but this didn’t happen in the uk version. Also the judges are placed high with electronic yes and no buttons and a reveal button to show if they want the chef or cook on there team. Therefore, why was the UK version scaled down to a Flip Pad on a table, Why aren’t we good enough to have those electronic buttons?
I personally feel that the British film and TV industry needs to up its game and start using the budgets as close as possible to the American version, the name of the game is exactly the same but, the amount of contestants and budget spent on the show isn’t. And that shows. Some people might disagree with me and say they don’t need those flashy buttons or flashy studio sets and this is fine. people are entitled to their opinion as am i. But, i do think if we take on an American Show and we scale it down, then our countries Film and TV industry gets scaled down also.
